Some stains are easy to remove without any fancy chemicals or special equipment. In other cases, the only way to get out a stain is to hire a carpet cleaning company. If you try to tackle carpet stains when they occur, you are more likely to get them out. Even if you need a carpet cleaner, removing the bulk of the stain will make it easier to eliminate later on.

In this guide, we will explain how to remove five common stains from your carpets.

Ink

Ink stains in carpet can be tricky because almost anything you do to them may cause them to spread. The best option for this type of carpet stain is isopropyl alcohol, which you may have in your medicine cabinet or office first aid kit. Put a small amount of isopropyl alcohol a washcloth and gently blot the area with the ink stain. Do not rub or scrub the area as that could spread the ink to other parts of the carpet.

Some carpet cleaning guides will also suggest using fingernail polish remover or hairspray to get rid of ink stains, but those options may not be suited for your carpeting. They may discolor or break down your carpet fibers. Avoid these DIY carpet cleaning solutions because they may do more harm than good.

Coffee

To remove coffee stains from carpet, first dab up as much of the coffee as possible. Use a mixture of water, white vinegar, and dish detergent to rub into the carpet and remove the stain. Rinse the area with warm water after you apply the solution, and then dab it dry. Repeat as needed until the stain is completely removed.

Pet Urine

There is no easy, fool-proof way to remove pet stains from carpet. If you catch the act shortly after your pet has urinated, you may be able to water down the area and pat away most of the urine. If the urine has been on the carpet for a while, you will need to use a special cleaner that is formulated for urine. To get rid of the odor, use a solution that is one part vinegar to one part warm water. Avoid any sort of ammonia based odor removal or stain removal product as that will only enhance the smell.

The best way to ensure that pet stains are completely removed from the carpet is to hire a carpet cleaning company to eliminate the stain and the odor. Contact The Resh Company at (410) 780-9800 for more information.

Wine

Wine is easier to get out of carpet than most people realize. You can use the same water, vinegar, detergent solution from above to clean up wine stains in carpet. Just make sure that you are using cold water. If this does not work, you can use one part dishwashing detergent with two parts hydrogen peroxide. Do not let this sit on the stain long though as the peroxide may discolor your carpet over time. Rinse the area well, and blot it dry.

Blood

Blood stains are easiest to remove right when the blood hits the carpet. Fill a spray bottle with cold (not warm) water and add two teaspoons of dishwashing detergent to it. Shake the bottle until the solution is well mixed, and then spray it on the stain liberally. Let the solution sit for a moment and then blot it dry. Repeat until the stain is out.
